Roasted Chance Farm Hakurei Turnips &

Miso-Honey Butter

IMG_1786.jpeg

This quick and easy stunner will have anyone drooling over turnips!  I love, LOVE cast iron roasted turnips, and this sweet, funky, limey, lil’ butter sauce is the key to this craveable snack or side dish!  The key to this dish is to get color on your turnips, but still keep their gentle crunch!  Let’s get roastin’!

Prep Time : 5 minutes

Cook Time : 5-7 minutes

Ingredients :

  • 1 bunch Chance Farm Hakurei turnips, trimmed leaving some stem, and cut so they have a flat side.  DO NOT throw out your greens, we are cooking those babies too!

  • Pinch of salt for the turnips

  • 2 Tablespoons oil for roasting

  • 1 large smashed clove of garlic, Chance Farm if ya have it!

  • 1.5 Tablespoons of unsalted butter

  • 1 Tablespoon local honey

  • 2 Tablespoons organic shoyu sauce

  • 1 teaspoon of miso paste

  • 2 small wedges of lime

  • 2 teaspoons of toasted white sesame seeds

Method:

Heat your cast iron pan to medium high heat, drizzle in your oil for cooking.  Gently place each turnip flat side down in the oil with a little pinch of salt.  Let the turnips sizzle, do not wiggle them around as many cooks will want to do, let them chill, hang out in the oil and do their thing!  They need to take on a golden brown color, color is flavor!

While your turnips are roasting, combine the butter, honey, shoyu, and miso in a small sauce pot and let come to a simmer, whisk thoroughly to break up the miso paste.  When you notice your turnips getting a nice golden brown color, remove them from the pan.  Toss in your smashed garlic clove and the turnip greens, let them wilt a bit, add a pinch of salt, and a splash of water to move them around and wilt a bit without losing their integrity or color.  Remove the clove of garlic, and remove the greens onto a paper towel.  Now, it’s time to plate, and finish your sauce!  Make a little bed with the greens, place your turnips golden side up, bring your sauce to a boil, it should look like dark caramel sauce, slightly thick, and a lil’ creamy looking.  Drizzle around and on your turnips and their greens.  Squeeze your lime wedges onto the turnips, and sprinkle with the toasted sesame seeds!

And, the BEST part, EAT!!
